…you need practical experience. While education is also very important, practical experience teaches:
- How to deal with your client/athlete, motivate
- Develop an eye for movements
- Adaptability
- Workout timing
- Cueing
These are just a few things that will help you develop an athlete or help you obtain a clients goal. Knowledge is key but if you don’t have the strong foundation to apply this knowledge it means nothing. This is why I believe interning, shadowing, volunteering, etc… is key for the personal training and sports performance training field.
Excluding programming application, working under a reputable personal trainer or performance coach teaches you how to carry yourself during practice or a training session. Whether it’s working with the football, volleyball, Olympic Weightlifting crew, or a fitness client, you have to approach the workout in different manners, from being loud and authoritative to super friendly, or just a positive upbeat Coach or trainer. This all can vary within the workout or team by team. And if you don’t know how to do so, you can easily lose respect of the team = bad news.
I’m not stating that education isn’t key for this field, it is! What I am saying is that practical experience will teach you so MUCH more then just sitting in front of the computer…
Stay strong,
